From Jura to Global Diagnostics: How Moonlight AI Is Transforming Cancer Detection
July 29, 2026
When Christian Ruiz, co-founder of Moonlight AI, set out to build the company, he was responding to a challenge he had witnessed throughout his career in diagnostics: too many patients are unable to access the molecular testing needed to receive the most effective cancer treatments.
“Most of the new cancer drugs that come onto the market require extensive molecular testing. Most patients do not have access to this type of diagnostics because these technologies require large laboratory infrastructure, are slow, have a long turnaround time, and are very expensive.”

Based at Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area – Jura Campus, the company is developing AI-powered computer vision software that detects genomic biomarkers and diagnoses complex diseases directly from routinely collected blood smear images. Rather than requiring laboratories to invest in entirely new equipment or workflows, the technology is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing diagnostic processes.
“Our software integrates seamlessly into existing laboratory workflows,” says Ruiz.
Turning an ambitious idea into a growing company
While Moonlight AI’s ambition is global, the company has deliberately chosen the Jura as its home. Early in its journey, the team participated in Basel Area Business & Innovation’s DayOne Tech program—now part of the InnoJura Accelerator—which provided access to healthcare expertise, infrastructure, and a network that helped transform an ambitious idea into a company preparing for commercialization.
Basel Area's DayOne Tech program heavily supported us during the last few years. They were the first ones who believed in us. They provided us with the right infrastructure, the location, and connections to people, experts who truly understand healthcare.

Some of those relationships continue to shape the company today. Four years later, the intellectual property lawyer Moonlight AI met through the Basel Area program still leads the company’s IP strategy and helps protect its innovations, demonstrating how the right startup ecosystem creates value long after a program has ended.
Building global innovation from the Jura
As Moonlight AI continued to grow, Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area – Jura Campus became the company’s long-term home. For a fast-growing deeptech company, innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. Access to expertise, peer exchange, and a collaborative environment can be just as important as laboratory space.
Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area – Jura Campus has provided a great, central location for Moonlight AI. Here, we meet our peers, our consultants, and other startup founders, often over coffee, to discuss projects, challenges, and solutions.

Those spontaneous conversations have become an integral part of daily life on campus. Whether exchanging ideas, solving technical challenges, or learning from fellow entrepreneurs, the Jura Campus offers an environment where innovation is strengthened through collaboration.
Why the Jura is becoming a destination for deeptech
Moonlight AI’s experience also reflects a broader trend. Increasingly, ambitious startups are choosing the Jura not only because of its strategic location within the Basel Area innovation ecosystem, but also because of the region’s collaborative spirit and targeted support from the canton for innovation.
The Jura region is attractive to startups like Moonlight AI because it offers support from the canton and connections to other startups working in similar fields.
Christian Ruiz, Co-founder of Moonlight AI
Located at the heart of one of Europe’s leading life sciences regions, Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area – Jura Campus combines access to expertise and international networks with an entrepreneurial community where founders can connect, collaborate, and grow together. For companies like Moonlight AI, that combination creates an ideal environment for developing globally relevant innovation while remaining rooted in a supportive regional ecosystem.
From breakthrough technology to real-world impact
Moonlight AI recently reached an important milestone by closing a US$3.3 million seed funding round. The investment will allow the company to finalize the development of its AI-powered computer vision platform, expand its team across Europe and North Africa, curate the datasets needed to further improve its algorithms, and prepare the technology for commercialization.
For Ruiz, however, success is measured by more than funding rounds or technological achievements.
Having spent many years working in healthcare diagnostics, he remains driven by a simple goal: making advanced diagnostics accessible to more patients.
“I realized that many patients do not have access to the right technologies,” he says. “For this reason, we built Moonlight AI. I’m convinced that with our solutions, many patients around the world will have access to this technology. That is what empowers us to continue our journey.”
As Moonlight AI continues to grow from its base in the Jura, its story demonstrates how globally relevant innovation can flourish in a collaborative regional ecosystem—where ambitious founders, expert support, and a strong startup community come together to transform breakthrough ideas into real-world healthcare impact.
