Allschwil – Birthplace of ground-breaking life sciences companies

Located in the midst of the Life Sciences Cluster Basel, Allschwil is a great location for aspiring start-ups, spin-offs or research groups from all over the world.

When planning to start a company, choosing the right location is obviously one of the key elements to success. Greater Basel offers excellent conditions for all ventures in the biotech, medtech and pharmaceutical industries. The city of Allschwil combines the benefits of an ambitious yet traditional suburban community with the proximity to Basel and the advantages of one of the world’s leading life sciences clusters with all its academic institutions, up to 700 life sciences companies and a considerable international pool of 33’000 life sciences talents to recruit from.

Several internationally successful companies were originally started in Allschwil or have headquarters here. Actelion, for example, a true poster child start-up, was founded in 1997 as a biopharmaceutical spin-off from F. Hoffmann-La Roche. The team literally started from scratch. Today, Actelion has around 2500 employees in more than 25 countries. Even though the company was acquired by US-based Johnson & Johnson recently, the global headquarters remain in Allschwil. American health care giant Abbott (with approximately 100’000 employees around the world) maintains its international center for generic pharmaceuticals in Allschwil. Viollier, a highly successful family-owned enterprise specialized in analyses and diagnostics, built its first of today’s three laboratories in Allschwil in the nineties.

One of the latest players to take residence in Allschwil is Idorsia: the drug development company was demerged from Actelion in summer 2017 and now has an experienced team of highly qualified professionals as well as a full R&D pipeline. The majority of these corporations are based in Allschwil’s Bachgraben quarter with its already existing and planned impressive, innovative architecture that in particular is marked by the outstanding designs of Herzog & De Meuron. The future of the quarter looks bright and new state-of-the art offices and labs are currently under development.

On the one hand, Allschwil fosters all the typical attributes of swissness. It provides security, reliable public transportation, dependable infrastructure and easy-to-reach recreational areas in the countryside. On the other hand, the city of Basel with its cosmopolitan vibrancy and large expat community is only a 10-minute tram ride away.

The convenient location also proves to be a big plus for companies: Allschwil is easily accessible for visitors coming in by plane, car or train – without having to go through the inner-city traffic or parking. The international airport can be reached within 15 minutes, just as the train station with excellent connections into all of Europe. A direct tram further connects Allschwil with the neighboring France and Germany.
